Former All Blacks great John Kirwan, who has also coached Italy and Japan at Rugby World Cups as well as being an advocate for sufferers of depression, was honoured with a knighthood on Monday.
The 47-year-old was named a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the country’s Queen’s Birthday honours list for his services to mental health and rugby union. Read more >>

Sabato 28 aprile p.v., alle ore 10, presso la Casa Circondariale di Frosinone, si terrà un incontro dimostrativo di rugby a favore della popolazione detenuta, organizzato dall’associazione Rugby col cuore, per portare lo spirito del rugby all’interno degli Istituti Penitenziari e diffondere i valori di questo sport – il rispetto, il sostegno reciproco, la fiducia, la correttezza – affinché diventino valori di tutta la società e strumenti di reinserimento sociale per i detenuti. The New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) today announced the appointment of Cure Kids as the Official Charity of the NZRU and All Blacks. Cure Kids funds research into children’s life-threatening illnesses and was selected from almost 60 charity applicants following a thorough process which got underway in November 2011.
The four-year partnership was officially unveiled at a reception in Auckland’s Pullman Hotel attended by members of the All Blacks and Black Ferns World Cup winning sides and representatives of the New Zealand Sevens side. Read more >>

The IRB-supported sports kit recycling initiative LV= SOS Kit Aid continues to go from strength to strength with 2011 seeing a 40 per cent increase in donations for disadvantaged young people around the globe.
Established in 2001, SOS Kit Aid has been endorsed and supported by the IRB since 2002. In January 2011, SOS Kit Aid formed a joint venture with recreational cricket’s official charity The Lord’s Taverners and in May the same year the initiative secured a new headline sponsor, LV= to further boost its activities. At the launch in the Aviva stadium in Dublin, Leinster Rugby captain Leo Cullen confirmed he will join the board of SIFE Ireland as a non-executive director.
Founded in the US in 1975, SIFE is an international, not-for-profit organisation which encourages university students to make a positive difference to their communities, while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders of the future. Read more >>

Former All Blacks great Jonah Lomu needs a new kidney transplant and has lost 30 kg in weight since last September, the 36-year-old has told a New Zealand magazine in an interview.
Lomu, who scored 37 tries in 63 test appearances for New Zealand between 1994 and 2002, had a first organ transplant eight years ago but that kidney stopped functioning in October last year. Read more >>
